Special Events
Back in the 1700 and 1800′s goods from Lynchburg were transported down the James River in flat bottomed boats known as batteaus. Poles were used to push the boat to their final destination, Richmond.
For the past 25 years, this mode of transportation has been re-enacted with replicas of the batteaus. Tomorrow at 11:00 am 24 batteaus will be launched from Percival’s Island in downtown Lynchburg as they start their 8 day trip to Richmond. Many of the crews of the boats will be in period garb. One batteau, Lady Slipper, features an all woman crew. In another batteau known as Anthony Rucker will be Roy Barnand, “River Rat” or “Rat” for short who has been in the past 24 Batteau Festivals.
The batteaus are made of white oak and are filled with water prior to setting sail to make the wood expand thereby making the boat watertight.
Admission to the event is free.
