“Dancing with Strings and Christmas Things”

The Academy of Fine Arts in downtown Lynchburg, Virginia is proud to offer a delightful holiday extravaganza.

“Dancing with Strings and Christmas Things” features exquisite dancers, fine musicians and Cantate’s angelic voices that will grace the Academy stage during this holiday season.  Two shows will be offered this season: Saturday, December 17th at 7:30pm or Sunday, December 18th at 2:00pm.  Ticket prices range between $13.00-$22.00 plus service fees.

3rd Annual Thomas Jefferson Wine Festival

Once again this year you can celebrate Jefferson’s passion for wine.  Held on Saturday, November 19, 2011, at Jefferson’s secluded retreat, Poplar Forest, just 20 minutes from Lynchburg, VA, this festival celebrates Jefferson as the “father of Virginia wine.”   Although largely unsuccessful in his day, his vision of great Virginia wines has been realized by wine makers throughout the state.

Showcasing 18 wineries, 13 artisans, 6 local food purveyors, musical entertainment and more, the day is filled with something for everyone.  House tours will be available throughout the day at a reduced rate.  Tasting tickets include a signature wine glass.  You must be 21 years or older to taste wines.  Festival will occur rain or shine in heated tents.

Stay with us at The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast, at least two consecutive nights, including November 19, 2011 and your festival tickets will be complimentary.  Festival tickets must be reserved and purchased by November 16, 2011.  You must mention this package when booking your accomodations and festival tickets.  Subject to availability.  This package cannot be combined with any other offer, discount, package or voucher.

Poplar Forest Candlelight Tours

Take advantage of the first afterhours, candlelight tours of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest.  Visit Jefferson’s private retreat for a special and unique tour.  Rarely open after hours these intimate tours will showcase what life was like when Thomas Jefferson and his family lived here.

Tour dates are November 3, 10 & 17, 2011, at 5:30pm.  Reservations and advance ticket purchase are required.  A matted print of Poplar Forest at night is included with each admission.

Old City Cemetery Candlelight Tours

It’s that time of year again….when Old City Cemetery, in Lynchburg Virginia, conducts it’s Candlelight Tours.  Visit various sites throughout the cemetery where professional actors will portray the lives of several of the cemeteries “residents.”  Always interesting, educational, moving and sometimes funny the stories told delight people of all ages.  And when else can you walk around a cemetery after dark?

The tours take place on October 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29, 2011 beginning at 6:30pm each evening.  The last tour will depart from the visitor center at 7:50pm.  Each tour lasts about one hour, travels over uneven ground, cobblestones and walkways so wear good walking shoes and bring along a flashlight.

Guests staying at The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast at least two nights, including a tour night, will receive complimentary tickets to one tour (limit two per room.)  As in year’s past advance reservations and tickets are necessary and tickets will sell out prior to the 21st.  Call 434.846.1388, mention this package, book your accomodations and secure a tour time.  Your tickets will be waiting for you upon arrival.  This package cannot be combined with any other special, package, voucher or discount.  Subject to availability.

Ghost Walks

Are you intrigued by ghosts, spirits, things or events that can’t quite be explained?

Then you will want to attend one of the Ghost Walks presented by the Lynchburg Historical Foundation and Tharp Funeral Home.  This years event will take place in the historic district, in Lynchburg, VA known as Diamond Hill.  On the nights of October 20, 21 & 22, 2011 walking tours will take place about every 30 minutes starting at 6:00pm until 8:30pm.  As these walks cover uneven ground and brick and slate sidewalks please wear comfortable walking shoes and perhaps bring along a flashlight.

Thomas Jefferson’s “Passion” was Hops!

Spend an afternoon discovering why Thomas Jefferson was the master of the house at Poplar Forest, the brew master that is, when the second in the series  exploring Jefferson’s “Passions” takes place on Sunday, September 25, 2011.

The terras roof will be the setting for learning about Jefferson’s brewing techniques.  You will have an opportunity to sample Jefferson-era beer recipes and tour the house and grounds after the presentaion is completed.

2011 Home Tour

The Lynchburg Historical Foundation’s Annual Tour of Homes will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2011 from 1:00-4:30 pm.  Six homes in the Rivermont Historic District will be highlighted this year.

In an effort to support the Lynchburg Historical Foundation, guets staying at The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast September 23, 24 and/or 25, 2011 (minimum 2-night stay) will receive complimentary tickets to the home tour. 

If you enjoy gazing back  into history and seeing homes rich in architectural detail then this is one weekend not to miss.

Thomas Jefferson’s Passion for Music

As the summer turns to fall Poplar Forest is offering its “Passion” series during September and October, focusing on Thomas Jefferson’s personal interests.

Beginning with the inaugural event on Sunday, September 11, 2011, the roof of the wing will be transformed into a stage as you are entertained with “Jefferson’s Passion for Music.”  A concert by singer and Celtic harpist Eve Walters blending song, sound and story follows a concert by Lynchburg’s violinist Jasper Oliver.

The event begins with a wine and cheese reception at 4:30pm during which attendees may wander through the house and grounds of Poplar Forest.

Guests staying at The Carriage House Inn Bed and Breakfast, for a minimum of two consecutive nights including September 11, 2011, will receive complimentary tickets to this after-hours event.  Advance reservations are required and seating is limited to 100.  In the event of rain the series will relocate to another area on the Poplar Forest property.  Call 434.846.1388 for more details and to make your room and “Passion” reservation.
